Chuyun Oh, PhD

Associate Professor of Dance

I am a dancer, choreographer, and an academic whose research focuses on popular dance, ethnography, and activism.

Research Interests

My research looks at popular dance and performance activism. Using ethnography, I have published works that address how dance overcomes trauma, such as sexual violence. I have also published an edited anthology focused on candlelight protest in S. Korea in 2017, which led to the impeachment of the former President. My recent research largely focuses on K-pop (Korean pop) dance. K-pop Dance: Fandoming Yourself on Social Media (Routledge, 2022) is the first book that theorizes "K-pop dance studies." It became #1 in the New Release in Popular Dance and Communications in July, 2022.
